Shake Shack VS In-N-Out Burger

Wanderlust Chronicles review of Shake Shack and In-N-Out Burger

As Aussies all the way in the land downunder, we thought we’d weigh in on the time old Shake Shack versus In-N-Out Burger debate. With our Aussie taste buds, accustomed to the best BBQ burgers out there, in our biased opinion, we thought it would be interesting to see what Aussies felt about the reigning supremes of America’s fast food market.
Shake Shack is New York’s finest. From humble beginnings as a concession stand in Madison Square Park, Shake Shack has gone on to become a bucketlist foodie haven in its own right. With our grumbling stomachs as our baggage for the day, we made our way to Shake shack to sample the famous and original Shack Burger and famous shakes. After a prompt ordering service, we were presented with a fresh Angus beef patty embellished with perfectly melted cheese, lettuce, tomato and the secret recipe Shack sauce which makes up the signature Shake Shack Burger. With one bite into the juicy burger, we were sold. The freshness of the burger in comparison to the heavy, fat laden fast foods that grace the nation, was the much needed difference in the burger market. Add THE BEST peanut butter or coffee shakes in the whole world, and Shake Shack had us worshipping at its holy shrine.
With so much to live up to, we don’t think In-N-Out Burger had a chance. And to admit, we hadn’t done our research and therefore, the super secret menu (http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2011/03/the-in-n-out-survival-guide-we-ate-every-single-item-on-the-secret-menu.html) was not even on our radar. Had we known about the secret menu, the animal fries and cheeseburger would have been on our order. But, unfortunately, we settled, and in blissful unawareness, with a cheeseburger and fries. In-N-Out’s cheeseburger elegantly layers onion, cheese, American beef, lettuce, tomato, and their special spread to create the world famous cheeseburger. Best devoured with a side of French fries and you have an LA favourite. The burger was good but didn’t meet our expectations. It wasn’t as fresh tasting as the Shake Shack burger and didn’t have quality shakes either. Mind you, the super secret menu could have tipped it over the line, but we will have to wait and see until next time!
