Top 5 Must-Dos in Venice, Italy

DSC02154

Venice is one of our favourite places in the world. A city that can be explored by foot and by canal is definitely a winner. See below for our tried and tested tips on the top 5 Venice experiences.
1. Take a Gondola ride
This is the quintessential Venice experience. On a clear day you will have the best views of the Grand Canal, the terracotta colours of the buildings, and a taste of Venetian daily life. Our tip is to walk the back streets of the canals to find private Gondoliers who will give you discounts and better value prices than the main booths you can catch them from.DSC02201
2. Carnevale
We were extremely lucky to experience Carnevale di Venezia in 2013. Carnevale signifies the end of Christian Lent and is the festival where the famed Venetian masks are worn. The otherwise quiet winter streets of Venice come alive with local Venetians wearing elaborate costumes and intricately hand crafted masks. It truly is a magical time to visit Venice.

3. Have a bellini
Originating in Venice, this delicious combination of Prosecco, a sparkling white wine, and peach puree is a must try for any Venice visitor. This cocktail is infamous around the world, so why not try the original at its birthplace, Harry’s Bar!

4. Shop in the backstreets
One of the reasons why we love this city so much is the discoveries we have made while roaming the back streets and canals of Venice. Our favourite finds so far are the bookstore, which had a first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, and a quaint shop selling prints of Venice and leather-bound notebooks. Shopping in Venice is a truly memorable experience.
5. Take a walking tour
The best way to see Venice is by joining a walking tour. Venice is beautiful by day and night so we recommend joining a ghost tour to see Venice by night whilst hearing about the history of Venice. This is a fun and memorable way to learn a bit about their rich history.
