Macao is so much more than casinos. On our recent trip to Macau, we discovered some great activities for all those wanting to escape the smoke and noise of the casinos. Here are our top 5 must-dos in Macau.
1. Old City
Macau shot to the top of our favourite places as soon as we explored the old city. The Portuguese influences on this now commercialized city give it a vibrancy and unique flavor unseen in other Asian cities. The monochrome mosaic pathways lit up by a backdrop of brightly multicoloured buildings make the whole city feel alive. Don’t miss Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s Cathedral.
2. Portuguese egg tarts
No visit to Macau is complete without trying a Portuguese egg tart. The traditional egg tart, made famous in Asia, has been given an even more delicious twist by the Portuguese, in the form of a flaky, buttery pastry casing and a flamed sugar top. The best place to get them? Lord Stow! Try the original or head to the Venetian for a classier affair.
3. The House of Dancing Water
The House of Dancing Water is a 2 billion Hong Kong Dollar production that is sure to excite! This is a great show for all ages to see. Witness Cirque du Soleil-esque feats of circustry (our own made up word!) set around an amazing ocean-like set.
4. AJ Hackett Bungee Jump
For thrill-seekers only, the AJ Hackett Bungee Jump is a must-do whilst in Macau. The experience is a bit expensive but we guarantee it will be a memory for a lifetime!
5. The Venetian
We can hear you all screaming that the Venetian IS A CASINO. But this must-do is on our list for the experience of a gondola ride or boutique shopping along the canals that flow through this iconic venue. It is like a trip to Venice without the expensive European price tag!
